Arkadi Monastery is a Greek Orthodox monastery founded in the 5th century, featuring a 16th-century church with Renaissance Revival and Baroque architecture situated on a fertile plateau 23 kilometers southeast of Rethymno. Visitors come to see this well-fortified monastery, a national sanctuary commemorating the Cretan resistance to Ottoman rule during the 1866 Cretan revolt, when 943 Greeks chose to sacrifice themselves rather than surrender.
