The Basilica Colegiata de Nuestra Señora de Guanajuato is the most visually striking and historically important of 23 religious buildings in central Guanajuato, featuring distinctive yellow exterior with wine-red details and a domed roof in Mexican Baroque style. Visitors can view the jewel-encrusted image of the Virgin Mary inside, a sacred artifact supposedly hidden from the Moors for over 800 years and presented to the city by King Philip II in 1557. The basilica occupies a prominent hilltop position on the Plaza de la Paz and serves as the spiritual center of the city, with its patron saint celebrated annually on August 9th with religious processions.
