Southwest just nuked the simplest hack in points travel. Starting January 1, 2027, credit card welcome bonuses, referral bonuses, anniversary points, category bonuses, and partner spend will no longer count toward Companion Pass qualification.

The airline is folding the legendary unlimited Companion Pass into a new top-tier status called Platinum. Hit 140,000 Tier Qualifying Points (TQP) or 100 qualifying one-way flights in a calendar year and you get it. Previously, you needed 135,000 Companion Pass Qualifying Points (CPQPs) or 100 flights, but the old CPQP bucket was far more generous.

Existing Companion Passes earned in 2026 are grandfathered through December 31, 2027. Promotions you’ve already registered for will be honored. After that, the free ride for your plus-one gets a lot more expensive.

The New Math That Stings

Under the current system, a big Chase Southwest card bonus could single-handedly push you over 135k. No more. Card spend will earn 1 TQP per dollar starting in 2027 across all Rapid Rewards cards. That means $140,000 in annual spend on a card just to clear the Platinum bar via plastic alone.

There’s a consolation prize at 95,000 TQP or 75 flights: a Milestone Reward granting three Companion Pass trips (each usable one-way or round-trip). It’s something, but it’s not the unlimited golden ticket business travelers have exploited for years.

The old two-tier system gets rebranded and slightly adjusted:

Silver (former A-List): 35,000 TQP or 25 flights.
Gold (former A-List Preferred): 65,000 TQP or 50 flights.
Platinum (new): 140,000 TQP or 100 flights, with unlimited Companion Pass.

Platinum also brings a 120% points bonus on flights, three free checked bags, Early Bird-style boarding before Gold, and any-seat selection at booking. Nice, but you’re basically living on Southwest to earn it legitimately.

Chase’s New Premium Card and Icon Lounges

Southwest is finally getting lounges. The Southwest Icon Lounges, developed in partnership with Chase, will open in late 2027 at Austin, Baltimore, Honolulu, and Nashville, with at least seven more to follow.

Access comes via a new premium Southwest Rapid Rewards credit card from Chase launching in 2027. Details on annual fee, benefits, and welcome offer remain under wraps, but expect it to sit above the current Priority card. Think along the lines of a Southwest-flavored Sapphire Reserve—hopefully with a bonus that still counts for status during any 2027 transition window.

The lounges promise locally inspired food, solid bars, and spaces designed around “Southwest Hospitality” rather than stuffy airline clubs. Whether they’ll be worth a new high-fee card depends entirely on how crowded they get and what else the card offers. Early renders look promising; execution in 2028 will tell.

Partner Awards Arrive (Finally)

On the brighter side, 2027 also brings partner award redemptions. Southwest points will be redeemable on international flights with undisclosed partner airlines. This is long-overdue for a program whose domestic award chart is basically “pay cash or use a ton of points during peak.”

Exact partners and award charts haven’t dropped yet, but the move suggests Southwest is inching toward a more traditional mileage currency. Expect some sweet spots if history is any guide—though Southwest being Southwest, they’ll probably find a way to make the best redemptions require 100 flights first.

Who Should Still Chase Companion Pass?

If you fly Southwest heavily for business and can naturally hit 100 segments or the new TQP thresholds through actual travel and normal card spend, Platinum + unlimited Companion Pass remains one of the best deals in travel. Your significant other, kids, or “companion” of choice can tag along for just taxes on most flights. That’s still massive.

For everyone else—the churners, the 40k-point bonus warriors, the people who manufactured the old 135k with two card apps and some referrals—the party is over. The new bar is real spend or real flying. Southwest has essentially told the manufactured-spend crowd to find another airline’s credit card program to game.

The window to act is narrow. If you’re sitting on approvals or have applications in the works, push hard to earn and use the old CPQPs before the calendar flips. Approved by December 2, 2026 on certain cards may still allow bonuses to count even if spend posts into 2027, but confirm the fine print.

After that, treat Companion Pass like the elite status it now is: something you earn by actually being a heavy Southwest customer, not a clever hacker.

Action item: Audit your 2026 Southwest spend and card applications today. If you can reach 135k CPQP by December 31 under current rules, pull the trigger. Otherwise, start modeling whether 140k TQP in 2027 is realistic given your travel patterns. The easiest Companion Pass hack in points travel just got retired. Adapt or find a new favorite airline.
