Dominica is one of the world's only year-round sperm whale habitats. Board a purpose-fitted catamaran with marine biologists for an intimate encounter with giants in their natural deep-water canyon.
What to expect
Dominica's deep submarine trench just offshore is one of the Caribbean's most productive cetacean corridors. The catamaran departs from the Cabrits or Roseau waterfront and typically locates resident sperm whale pods within 30 minutes — these extraordinary mammals dive to 1,000 metres and return to the surface right alongside the boat. Spinner dolphins frequently surf the bow wave en route. On-board naturalists narrate behaviour in real time and capture photo-ID data for ongoing research. Chilled drinks and snorkelling stops round out the 3–4 hour excursion.
Good to know
Sperm whales are present year-round; humpbacks peak November–March. Depart by 8–9 AM for the calmest seas. Book direct via the Anchorage Hotel website. Motion-sensitive travellers should take precautions; the offshore channel can be choppy. Returns well within standard port hours.
