Inner Farne Landing: Puffins, Terns & the Hermit's Chapel

Land on Inner Farne itself, walk among nesting puffins and arctic terns so close they brush your head, and stand where St Cuthbert lived as a hermit.

What to expect

A National Trust warden meets you at the jetty, hands you a stick (the terns dive-bomb heads, not sticks), then leaves you free to wander the boardwalks at your own pace for around an hour. Puffins sit at burrow mouths within touching distance, and the cliffs are a wall of guillemots and kittiwakes. Photographers get an unhurried window most day-trippers never get because Billy Shiel prioritises the landing over a quick photo pass.

Good to know

Book the earliest sailing of the day from Seahouses harbour — light is better and crowds thinner; landing trips depend on weather/tide and sell out days ahead in May–July, so reserve before you're in port. Return with time to spare before all-aboard, as later sailings run longer.
