Tablelands Trail: Walk on the Earth's Mantle

A short, self-guided walk across an otherworldly orange-brown landscape of exposed mantle rock, utterly unlike anywhere else accessible on foot.

What to expect

The trail begins at a small parking area off Route 431 and follows a gentle gravel path along a stream valley into the barren Tablelands massif. Peridotite rock, toxic to most plants, creates a rust-red desert-like scene in stark contrast to the green fjords nearby. Interpretive panels explain plate tectonics and the rare pitcher plants that do survive here. Most visitors walk 40-60 minutes round trip to the base of the massif.

Good to know

Wear sturdy shoes — no shade and uneven ground; pair it with the catamaran tour or Woody Point visit since it's just outside town, and buy the day pass at the visitor centre or self-serve kiosk.
