A private, expert-led walk through Heimaey town and up Eldfell volcano, whose 1973 eruption buried a third of the town — told by people who lived it.
What to expect
You start inside Eldheimar, built directly over an excavated house entombed by the 1973 lava flow, then walk out onto the still-warm lava field itself and climb Eldfell for sweeping views over the harbour and, on a clear day, Surtsey itself on the horizon. Your guide, often a Heimaey local, shares family stories from the eruption and evacuation. The pace is unhurried, with time to absorb both the geology and the human drama.
Good to know
Museum is a short walk from Heimaey's harbour; the volcano hike adds about 90 minutes — wear proper shoes, as lava terrain is uneven and can be windy.
