A quiet, small-group visit to the world's first open-sea beluga whale sanctuary, home to two belugas rescued from a Chinese aquarium.
What to expect
A short visitor centre walk leads to a viewing platform over the netted sea sanctuary bay, where you can watch Little Grey and Little White, two belugas relocated here after years in captivity, moving freely in open Icelandic water. Staff explain the rescue and rehabilitation project and the science of beluga behaviour. It's contemplative rather than spectacular — a good counterpoint to the volcanic drama elsewhere on the island.
Good to know
Located a short walk from Heimaey harbour; visits are self-paced, roughly 45–60 minutes, no advance booking strictly required but recommended in peak season.
