Yaakw Kahidi Cultural Center & Hoonah Walking Introduction

Walk into the actual town of Hoonah, the largest Tlingit village in Alaska, and sit with carvers, weavers, and elders at the tribal cultural center. This is what the place is, not what the cruise dock is.

What to expect

From the pier, walk or take the local shuttle the mile into town past clapboard houses, fishing boats, and the harbor. At the cultural center, see totem carving in progress, regalia, and clan house artifacts, often with a Tlingit guide on hand to explain crest stories. Continue to Icy Strait Brewing or a local café for lunch among residents, not tour groups.

Good to know

Many downtown Hoonah shops and eateries keep short hours — check ahead. This pairs well as a low-key afternoon after a morning wildlife tour; total time 2-3 hours.
