A quiet, guided walk up to the hilltop cemetery where Paul Gauguin and Jacques Brel are buried, timed for the soft late-afternoon light over Atuona Bay.
What to expect
You'll walk up from Atuona through breadfruit and frangipani trees, past modest graves, to Gauguin's simple tomb marked by a cast of his sculpture Oviri, and Brel's grave overlooking the sea he loved. The guide lingers on the human stories — exile, disease, obsession, escape — rather than rushing the route. As the sun drops, the bay below turns copper and the whole island seems to exhale.
Good to know
Best done in late afternoon (light and temperature); it's a 20-30 minute uphill walk from the landing, wear real shoes; easily paired with the Gauguin Cultural Center below.
