Snorkeling with Manta Rays & Reef Life off Hanaiapa

A private boat trip along Hiva Oa's dramatic north coast to snorkel with resident manta rays in clear water off a remote bay, since Atuona itself has no swimmable beach.

What to expect

The boat threads beneath Hiva Oa's sheer, jungle-draped cliffs — among the most dramatic coastline in the Pacific — to reach bays around Hanaiapa or Puamau where manta rays regularly feed close to the surface. Visibility is excellent and the operators know individual mantas by their markings. You'll also pass sea caves and waterfalls visible only from the water, with the crew narrating the coast's geology and legends en route.

Good to know

Book several weeks ahead in high season; the crossing can be swell-dependent so mornings are calmer; bring reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard, as the water can be cool.
