Land by Zodiac on Jan Mayen's black volcanic shore and stand beneath Beerenberg, the world's northernmost active volcano, guided by an Arctic naturalist.
What to expect
You'll board a Zodiac in small groups and land at one of the few permitted sites on this restricted, uninhabited island. The naturalist explains the 1970 and 1985 eruptions and points out the ice cap draped over the crater rim. Expect black sand, driftwood, and total silence broken only by wind and surf. Landings are weather-dependent and never guaranteed.
Good to know
Only possible on genuine expedition-style itineraries (not mainstream cruise calls); waterproof boots and layered Arctic clothing are essential; landing permits are limited so timing is set by the expedition leader, not you.
