Volcanic Beach Geology Walk

A slow, guide-led walk across Jan Mayen's black basalt beaches and lava formations explaining the island's active volcanic geology.

What to expect

The geologist walks the small landing group along the shoreline, pointing out basalt columns, pumice, and recent lava flows from the 1970 eruption. Expect hands-on moments — picking up and examining rock samples — and explanation of how the volcano interacts with the ice cap above. The pace is deliberately slow and conversational.

Good to know

Landing sites and duration depend on the expedition leader and weather that day; wear grippy waterproof footwear for uneven volcanic rock.
