Otranto Cathedral's Mosaic Floor, Explained Properly

See the 12th-century Tree of Life mosaic — one of Europe's largest and strangest medieval floors — with someone who can actually read its symbolism.

What to expect

Inside the cool, dim cathedral, your docent walks you along the mosaic's zodiac, myth and biblical imagery, and into the crypt-like Chapel of the Martyrs where the bones of Otranto's 800 martyrs are kept behind glass. It's a sobering, quietly extraordinary half hour, not a photo stop.
