Oshima Tsumugi: Master Weaver's Mud-Dyeing Atelier Visit

Step into a working atelier where artisans still mud-dye silk threads in iron-rich rice paddies, a centuries-old technique found nowhere else on earth.

What to expect

A weaver or dye-master walks you through the extraordinary process: threads dyed dozens of times in tannin-rich sharinbai wood extract, then plunged into iron-heavy mud that turns them a deep black-brown through chemical reaction. You'll see hand looms clacking away producing the famously intricate kasuri patterns, and can try dipping thread yourself. Finished textiles for sale are museum-quality and eye-wateringly precise.

Good to know

About a 20-minute taxi from the pier; call ahead for an English-speaking guide slot, as most sessions run in Japanese. Allow 1.5–2 hours including the small shop.
