What to expect
The building itself, designed with traditional Amami motifs, sets a quiet, contemplative tone. Inside, you move through galleries of intensely detailed botanical and landscape paintings that Isson made almost in isolation over 20 island years, only recognized as a major artist after his death. It rarely has more than a handful of other visitors, so you can look as long as you like.

About a 10-minute taxi from the pier; call ahead to see if an English-speaking docent or curator can walk you through, as signage is mostly Japanese. Budget 45–60 minutes.
