Board a private skiff and motor up the wild Monkey River into untouched rainforest, coming face-to-face with troops of howler monkeys, basilisk lizards, and ancient riverside Maya ruins in one breathtaking half-day.
What to expect
Depart by private boat from the Placencia dock, skimming south along the Caribbean coast before turning up the dark, tea-coloured Monkey River. Your boatman-guide cuts the engine as you enter dense jungle, where troops of black howler monkeys — Belize's largest land mammal — crash through the canopy overhead and call with an otherworldly roar. Spot green iguanas, Jesus Christ lizards (they run on water), jabiru storks, and crocodiles on the banks. A short jungle walk reveals tropical hardwood trees and medicinal plants before you boat back with the breeze in your face.
