Whale Watching Expedition in the Ligurian Sea Cetacean Sanctuary

Sail into the Pelagos Cetacean Sanctuary — a protected marine reserve the size of a small country — aboard a dedicated research vessel for encounters with fin whales, sperm whales, and dolphins in their natural habitat.

What to expect

Depart from Santa Margherita Ligure and head into the deep blue corridor where the Ligurian seabed plunges to 2,500 metres — prime feeding ground for some of Europe's largest cetaceans. A resident marine biologist briefs guests on the Pelagos Sanctuary's ecology and what to look for on the horizon. Fin whale sightings — the second-largest animals on earth — are common from June through October, and pods of striped dolphins frequently bow-ride alongside the vessel. Sperm whales, Cuvier's beaked whales, and even the occasional blue whale have been recorded in these waters.
