Tour the storied Yukishio salt pans on Miyakojima's eastern shore — Japan's most celebrated artisan sea-salt producer — then sit down to a curated Ryukyu tasting table pairing the island's mineral-rich salts with premium awamori spirits and local delicacies.
What to expect
A knowledgeable factory guide walks you through the extraordinary solar-evaporation process unique to Miyakojima's mineral-rich coral-filtered seawater. In the private tasting room, six signature salts — ranging from delicate fleur-de-sel style crystals to bold smoked varieties — are presented alongside a curated plate of local tofu, mozuku seaweed, and aged Miyakojima awamori. The salt-maker himself (or herself) describes the flavour nuances with the seriousness of a Burgundy vigneron. You leave with a beautifully packaged selection as a lasting memento.
Good to know
Factory is 20 mins by car from Hirara Port; admission is open to walk-ins but the private tasting must be pre-booked. Full experience runs approx. 1.5 hrs — easy to combine with the Hennazaki cape walk for a full-day itinerary. Excellent gift-buying opportunity for premium Japanese artisan produce.
