Toba Aquarium: Dugongs, Giant Isopods & Marine Wilderness

One of Japan's finest aquariums and one of only a handful worldwide to exhibit the elusive dugong. With 12 zones and over 1,200 species, this is a genuine marine science encounter, not a theme park.

What to expect

Move through 12 themed zones spanning tropical reefs, Antarctic ice, and the abyssal deep. The dugong feeding session (usually 10:30 and 15:30) is genuinely moving — these gentle, sea-grass-grazing mammals are critically endangered and almost never seen in captivity. The deep-sea zone, home to giant isopods and oarfish specimens, is hauntingly beautiful. The aquarium also holds research exhibits on Ise-Shima's marine ecosystem that reward curious, unhurried visitors.

Good to know

The aquarium is within walking distance (5–10 min) of the Toba pier — no transfer needed. Check the dugong feeding schedule on the official website before your visit. Allow 2–2.5 hours. Combine with Mikimoto Pearl Island (a 5-min walk away) for an efficient half-day pairing.
