Glide across one of Japan's Three Scenic Views — 260 pine-clad islands rising from Matsushima Bay — aboard a private sightseeing vessel, then step inside a 17th-century tea pavilion for a moment of pure stillness.
What to expect
Your government-licensed guide meets you at the port and transfers you to Matsushima, just 40 minutes away. A private or small sightseeing boat weaves between the 260 forested islets as your guide narrates centuries of poetry and painting inspired by this bay. Ashore, you enter Kanrantei ('Wind-in-Pines Pavilion'), a teahouse gifted by warlord Date Masamune, and take matcha overlooking the water. The return journey leaves generous buffer time before all-aboard.
Good to know
Matsushima is ~40 min by road from Ishinomaki port or ~60 min from Sendai port. Book a private guide at least 2 weeks ahead. Kanrantei entry is JPY 200; tea ceremony is extra. Confirm all-aboard time and build in 90-min return buffer.
