Journey 30 minutes into the forested Natori River gorge to Akiu — one of Tohoku's three great hot spring towns — then walk the cedar trail to the thundering 55-metre Akiu Otaki Falls, one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls.
What to expect
A 30-minute scenic drive deposits you at the trailhead above the Natori River gorge. A 20-minute cedar-shaded walk leads to the base of Akiu Otaki Falls, where 55 metres of white water crash into a mist-filled pool. Back in the onsen village, several ryokan welcome day visitors for ashiyu (open-air footbaths) — a restorative pause before the return drive. The surrounding valley blazes with maple colour in autumn and fresh green in spring.
