Walk a primeval forest path beside the crystalline Oirase Stream, then emerge onto the caldera shores of sacred Lake Towada — one of Japan's most breathtaking natural tableaux, best savored in private.
What to expect
Your guide collects you at the pier and drives south into the Towada-Hachimantai National Park. You walk a curated 2 km stretch of the Oirase Gorge trail, where 14 named waterfalls tumble through ancient beech forest and the air is thick with negative ions. Arriving at Lake Towada, you cruise along the shoreline road to the Nenokuchi viewpoint, where two rivers appear to meet a volcanic caldera of impossible blue. A seasonal bento lunch can be arranged with local wagyu and Aomori apple cider vinegar dishes.
Good to know
Round trip is approximately 3.5 hours driving; budget 7–8 hours total including walking. Autumn foliage (mid-October) is sublime and sells out fast — reserve 3+ months ahead. Flat, well-maintained trail suits most fitness levels; wear comfortable shoes. No entry fee for the gorge trail; Lake Towada cruise optional at JPY 1,400 per person.
