Skim the legendary Saguenay Fjord on a nimble Zodiac with a bilingual naturalist, tracking up to 13 whale species in one of the world's great cetacean sanctuaries. Few wildlife encounters on earth rival a beluga surfacing at arm's length.
What to expect
Board a rigid-hull inflatable at the Baie-Sainte-Catherine or La Baie pier and streak into the confluence of the Saguenay and St. Lawrence, guided by a marine-biology-trained naturalist who reads the water for spouts and flukes. Belugas are resident year-round, while fin, humpback, and minke whales are seasonally abundant. The low profile of the Zodiac means the animals approach on their own terms, and hydrophone recordings let you hear whale song in real time. Dry suits and life vests are provided; you'll return exhilarated and salt-sprayed.
Good to know
Season: June to October — peak whale diversity in August and September. Pre-book well in advance; small-group Zodiac seats sell out weeks ahead. Confirm all-aboard time with your ship and allow 3–4 hours total; the La Baie departure point is roughly 30 min by taxi from the cruise pier.
