Toyama is one of Japan's great lacquerware and woodcraft prefectures. In this intimate, hands-on workshop you hand-plane and lacquer a pair of personal hashi (chopsticks) under a master craftsperson — a quietly beautiful souvenir and a window into centuries of Hokuriku craft tradition.
What to expect
Work alongside a local craftsperson at a dedicated workshop studio in central Toyama. Select your wood, shape the chopstick profile with a hand plane, sand through progressively finer grades, and apply a base lacquer coat. Your guide translates and provides cultural commentary throughout. The session lasts approximately 60–90 minutes, leaving ample time for the canal and castle.
Good to know
Book at minimum 1 week ahead; the workshop fills on cruise-call days. Lacquer needs to cure — the operator wraps finished sticks safely for travel. Suitable for all ages; comfortable indoor setting.
