One of the most beautiful public gardens in the American South, Norfolk Botanical Garden unfolds across 175 waterfront acres — best explored by narrated boat through its tidal canals and by open-air tram through 30 themed gardens.
What to expect
Board a quiet electric boat and drift past Japanese cherry trees, a Renaissance garden, a healing garden, and a spectacular rose collection in full bloom (peak April–June). The tram tour connects the garden's far reaches, including the spectacular Bicentennial Rose Garden and the tranquil Japanese Garden. The garden's position on the shores of Lake Whitehurst means every view is framed by water. In spring, the azalea display alone is worth the visit.
Good to know
Boat tours depart at 11 AM, 1 PM, 3 PM, and 5 PM — pre-booking strongly recommended as they sell out on busy days. The garden is a 15–20 minute rideshare from the cruise terminal. Allow 2.5–3 hours for both boat and tram. Comfortable flat shoes; the paths are paved.
