Ascend 1,011 metres in just 5 minutes aboard the world's steepest gondola, rising from the mirror-surface of Lake Lovatnet to the jagged summit of Mt. Hoven. The 360° panorama — fjords, glaciers, and eternal snowfields — is simply without equal in Western Norway.
What to expect
The gondola climbs a near-vertical cliff face in a silent, glass-walled cabin — your stomach will flip pleasantly as the fjord shrinks beneath you. At the top, the Hoven restaurant serves locally sourced Norwegian cuisine with what may be the greatest dining view in the country. The marked ridge path to Ramnefjellet rewards those who walk 20 minutes further with absolute solitude and a photographer's dream. The descent is equally theatrical.
Good to know
Loen village is 10 km from Olden pier; arrange a taxi or the Olden Adventure shuttle in advance. The Skylift is 10% discounted if you book through Olden Adventure (they handle the logistics). Arrive early — first gondolas are quieter and light is best in the morning. Last gondola down is critical: confirm times against your ship's all-aboard.
