Descend into the Furnas caldera where the earth bubbles and steams, taste the legendary cozido das Furnas slow-cooked underground in volcanic heat, then unwind in a private thermal circuit as dusk settles over the crater. A complete sensory immersion into Azorean volcanic life.
What to expect
A private driver takes you east through volcanic ridgelines to the Furnas caldera floor, stopping at the fumarole field where geysers hiss beside the lakeside chapel. Lunch is the iconic cozido: a rich stew of meats and root vegetables excavated after hours of geothermal cooking. Afterwards, slip into the amber thermal waters of the Terra Nostra garden pool, surrounded by ancient tree ferns. The drive back at golden hour along the south coast is spectacular.
Good to know
Furnas is 50 minutes from port; plan a full day (7 hrs minimum). Terra Nostra pool is best visited late afternoon when coach groups have left. Book the restaurant for the cozido at least 48 hrs ahead — it sells out. Bring a swimsuit and flip-flops in your day bag.
