Clamber aboard a full-scale working replica of Henry Hudson's legendary 1609 VOC vessel, the Halve Maen (Half Moon) — the ship that 'discovered' Manhattan — moored in Hoorn's original harbour where she was first built.
What to expect
Guides in period dress animate the cramped realities of a 17th-century ocean crossing: the tiny sleeping quarters, the open cook-fire, the hand-pumped bilges. The ship is moored in the picturesque Buitenhaven, making for outstanding photography against the historic waterfront backdrop. Visit is self-guided with display panels; costumed crew are on hand to answer questions. Best combined with a walk along the Oude Haven afterward.
Good to know
A 5-minute walk from the cruise pier along the waterfront. Opening is seasonal — check halvemaen.com before visiting. Allow 1.5 hours including the harbour walk. Combine with the Westfries Museum for a full Golden Age morning.
