Cruise to Amanohashidate — a 3.6 km pine-clad sandbar ranked as one of Japan's Three Views — then ascend to the clifftop Kasamatsu Park to see it framed between your legs as a 'bridge floating to heaven.' A uniquely Japanese perspective literally unlike anything else on earth.
What to expect
Drive or taxi to Amanohashidate in under an hour, board the sightseeing boat across the bay, then stroll or cycle the pine-shaded sandbar with the sea shimmering on both sides. Ascend by ropeway to Kasamatsu Park, where the traditional 'またのぞき' (またのぞき, viewing between the legs) transforms the sandbar into a celestial bridge suspended in blue sky. The surrounding Tango Peninsula coastline, visible from the summit, is raw and utterly unspoiled.
Good to know
This is the most time-efficient bucket-list excursion from Maizuru — 40 min transfer each way leaves 3–4 hours on-site comfortably before all-aboard. The Maizuru Bay Sightseeing Boat departs from Red Brick Park — purchase tickets at the park on the day. Cycle rental on the sandbar is approx. JPY 500/hr for a gentler exploration.
