Venture into Lokobe, Nosy Be's only primary rainforest reserve, for a private guided wildlife immersion. Black lemurs, panther chameleons and rare endemic reptiles inhabit a jungle found nowhere else on Earth — this is bucket-list Madagascar at its most raw.
What to expect
A traditional pirogue canoe ferries you across the mangrove-lined channel to the reserve's edge, immediately transporting you into another world. Your guide deciphers the forest floor: chameleons frozen on branches, geckos on bark, and the electric-blue eyes of a black lemur peering through the canopy. The forest interior is dense, cool and intoxicatingly alive. Return by canoe and pirogue, with spice plantation stops en route.
Good to know
Wear long, light clothing and closed shoes — the forest trail is uneven and muddy after rain. Tour duration approx. 4–5 hrs; depart by 08:00 to allow a leisurely pace. Mosquito repellent is essential. Reserve guides directly via nosybetour.com at least 2 weeks ahead in high season (July–September).
