Descend on the SS Yongala — a 110-metre ocean liner lost in 1911 and now rated among the world's top ten wreck dives. Massive bull sharks, giant grouper, sea turtles and manta rays make this a once-in-a-lifetime underwater pilgrimage.
What to expect
Transfer by purpose-built dive vessel from Townsville's harbour, cruising ~90 minutes south to the protected wreck site. A thorough dive briefing covers the Yongala's tragic history and the extraordinary marine life that has colonised every surface. Two dives explore the full length of the wreck — bull sharks circle languidly, enormous Queensland grouper hover at the bow, and hawksbill turtles glide past encrusted portholes. Surface intervals are spent under the tropical sun with lunch on deck before the leisurely return to port.
