Ascend Townsville's iconic red granite monolith with a knowledgeable local guide and be rewarded with sweeping 360° views across the Coral Sea, Magnetic Island and the tropical coastline — a defining Townsville experience, entirely on foot.
What to expect
The trail winds up 286 metres of ancient pink granite through dry tropical scrub alive with rock wallabies and vivid butterfly species. Your guide narrates the Wulgurukaba people's deep connection to the rock, the wartime significance of the hill as a lookout, and the unique geology that makes Castle Hill glow blood-red at dusk. The summit view is simply spectacular — Magnetic Island floats on a turquoise sea, Ross Creek threads through the city below, and on clear days the Great Barrier Reef shimmers on the horizon. The descent offers a different perspective, cooling into shaded sections perfect for spotting native birds.
