Venture into the wild Setesdal valley — Norway's most dramatic inland fjord gorge — and hunt for gemstones and minerals at Evje, Scandinavia's richest rockhounding territory. A bucket-list collision of scenery and hands-on treasure-seeking.
What to expect
The drive north from Mandal through the Setesdal valley is itself spectacular — deep river gorges, pine forests, and traditional Agder farmsteads. At the mineral park, you prospect for feldspar, garnet, and even semi-precious stones with expert guidance. The region holds over 200 recorded mineral species. Return via the scenic E39 coastal road for a contrasting seascape finale.
Good to know
Evje is approximately 60 km north of Mandal — about 1 hour each way. Allow a full day (6–7 hours). Pre-arrange a private driver/guide from Mandal; the mineral park is open May–September. Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes and bring a small bag for your finds.
