Witness one of Earth's most dramatic tidal spectacles as one of the world's largest inshore reefs dramatically 'rises' from the ocean, waterfalls streaming from its edges — then drift among sea turtles, rays and dugongs.
What to expect
As the tide ebbs, the vast Montgomery Reef — spanning 400 square kilometres — literally appears to rise from beneath the ocean surface, rivers of seawater cascading off its edges. A Zodiac positions you trackside for this theatrical moment. Guides then navigate the newly exposed reef flat among basking sea turtles, leopard sharks, and feeding rays. An optional helicopter overflight transforms the scale into something truly comprehensible.
Good to know
Montgomery Reef is only accessible during specific tidal windows — timing is everything and only expedition vessels with experienced local captains can reliably position guests for the emergence. No sunscreen in the water; reef-safe clothing recommended. Bring polarised sunglasses for optimal wildlife spotting.
