Ride the Christchurch Gondola to the rim of an ancient volcanic crater for a 360° panorama stretching from the Canterbury Plains and the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean. One of New Zealand's great viewpoints, made accessible in extraordinary style.
What to expect
The gondola cabin ascends 500 metres through native tussock and Port Hills bush in under ten minutes, revealing a panorama that grows more spectacular with every metre gained. At the summit, the Time Tunnel walk-through experience traces the geological and human history of Canterbury from volcanic eruption to the present day. The Summit Café serves excellent New Zealand coffee and locally sourced cabinet food with floor-to-ceiling views. Keen walkers can extend the experience along the crater rim track — one of the city's finest short hikes — before descending.
Good to know
Located on Bridle Path Road, Heathcote Valley — less than 10 minutes by car from Lyttelton port, making this one of the most time-efficient excursions available. Open daily; no advance booking required for the gondola itself, though arriving early avoids any queues on busy cruise days. Combine with a Lyttelton Farmers' Market visit (Saturday mornings) for a perfect half-day.
