Walk the narrow atoll ribbon to swim in both the glassy turquoise lagoon and the wild open Pacific in a single morning — two completely different oceans, two completely different worlds, separated by barely 200 metres of coconut palm.
What to expect
From the tender dock, a short walk through coconut groves leads to the lagoon beach — shallow, warm, and impossibly clear, perfect for floating and snorkelling over coral bommies. Cross the atoll's narrow spine through the palms and you reach the ocean side: deeper turquoise, a gentle shore break, and an unbroken horizon stretching to Hawaii. The contrast — serene lagoon versus the open Pacific — is one of those rare geographic moments that travel writers struggle to describe. Hermit crabs, nesting seabirds, and brilliant butterflies accompany you throughout.
Good to know
Wear water shoes — the coral-sand path and ocean entry have sharp reef fragments. The ocean side has no lifeguard; assess conditions before entering and never swim alone. Apply reef-safe sunscreen only — Fanning's ecosystem is pristine and should stay that way. Aim to be back at the tender dock 45 minutes before all-aboard.
