Cross to the neighbouring island of Santo Antão and plunge into one of the most dramatic landscapes in the Atlantic — emerald valleys, cliff-face villages, and the jaw-dropping Fontainhas ledge path. An expert local guide unlocks what no map can.
What to expect
Board the morning ferry from Mindelo's Porto Grande — the short crossing reveals São Vicente's silhouette at its most cinematic. On Santo Antão your guide leads you through terraced valleys and along the legendary coastal cliffside trail into Fontainhas village, where houses cling to the rock face above the Atlantic. Lunch is a long, unhurried affair featuring grogue (local sugarcane spirit) and freshly grilled fish at a family table. The return ferry puts you back in Mindelo well before all-aboard.
Good to know
Ferry departs Mindelo Porto Grande terminal approx. 08:00; return ferry arrives ~17:30 — confirm all-aboard time is 19:00 or later before booking. Pre-book the guide at least 48 hours in advance as capacity is very limited. Wear sturdy walking shoes; the Fontainhas path involves uneven stone steps.
