Hike through Rarotonga's primeval rainforest interior to the base of The Needle — a dramatic 413-metre volcanic pinnacle rising from the jungle — with an expert local guide who decodes every plant, legend, and birdcall along the way.
What to expect
The trail winds up through dense, humid jungle alive with the calls of the Rarotonga flycatcher and Kakerori — some of the Pacific's rarest birds. Your guide narrates the legend of The Needle and the ancestral stories tied to the valley below. At the base of the towering basalt pinnacle, the view opens across the entire island to both the lagoon and the open ocean simultaneously. The descent passes cool freshwater streams and ancient terraced gardens. Total trek time is approximately 3–4 hours — suitably challenging, never gruelling.
