Ascend beyond Taormina to the medieval eagle's-nest village of Castelmola — a place so dramatically perched it makes Taormina look flat — for 360° views of Etna, the Ionian and the Strait of Messina.
What to expect
From Taormina's Piazza IX Aprile your guide leads you on the scenic footpath (or arranges a private minivan for those who prefer) winding 300 metres upward through terraced almond groves to Castelmola. The village is a handful of medieval lanes, a ruined Norman castle and a handful of bars — including the legendary Caffè San Giorgio, famous for its almond wine, served in a glass that has been refilled by four generations of the same family. From the castle ramparts, on a clear day, you can see the toe of mainland Italy across the Strait. It is one of the most arresting views in the Mediterranean.
Good to know
Castelmola is only 5 km from Taormina centro but the road is steep and narrow — a private minivan or the guided footpath (45-minute ascent) are the only sensible options. Combine with the Greek Theatre in the morning for a full-day Taormina experience. Allow 2.5–3 hours for Castelmola alone.
