Slip into the warm, protected waters of Richardson Ocean Park — Hilo's finest snorkelling cove — where Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) glide beneath you over volcanic coral. A jet-black sand beach, crystalline water, and virtually no crowds make this a genuinely magical Big Island moment.
What to expect
Your small group is transferred to Richardson Ocean Park, a sheltered lava-rock cove just minutes from the pier where the contrast of jet-black volcanic sand and vivid turquoise water is immediately striking. Your certified ocean guide briefs you on Hawaiian marine etiquette and turtle behaviour before you enter the water. Below the surface, vibrant reef fish dart through lava formations and, almost invariably, a Hawaiian green sea turtle drifts serenely past — a protected, awe-inspiring encounter. Post-snorkel, the black sand beach and swaying palms make for an idyllic, unhurried finale.
Good to know
Richardson Ocean Park is approximately 2 miles from the Hilo pier — a short drive. All snorkel equipment (mask, fins, wetsuit if desired) is included. The cove is naturally sheltered, making it suitable for most ability levels. Morning departures offer the calmest water and best turtle sightings. Allow 3 hours total, leaving a comfortable all-aboard buffer. Federal law prohibits touching or approaching turtles within 10 feet — your guide enforces this for everyone's safety.
