Ascend into the lush highlands above Alotau for sweeping 270-degree views over Milne Bay, the island-dotted horizon, and the forested valleys below. A private vehicle and local guide turn a scenic drive into a storytelling journey through living landscapes.
What to expect
The road climbs steeply from Alotau through groves of betel nut and pandanus, with the bay growing ever more spectacular below. At Dalai Heights Lookout, the full sweep of Milne Bay unfolds — on clear days, distant islands shimmer on the horizon and cruise ships in the harbour look like toys. Your guide identifies endemic bird species including the magnificent Goldie's Bird-of-Paradise in the surrounding forest canopy. Village stops along the route offer spontaneous encounters with local life.
Good to know
Half-day excursion; manageable within most port schedules. A 4WD vehicle is advisable after rain as hill roads can be slippery. Contact Kwalia Adventure & Expeditions via their Facebook page to arrange a private vehicle. Best undertaken in the morning before afternoon cloud builds over the hills.
