Ride a traditional wooden pirate ship across the ethereal caldera lake of Hakone with Mt. Fuji as your backdrop, then ascend via ropeway above sulphurous volcanic vents. Japan's most iconic landscape, experienced in complete luxury and privacy.
What to expect
A private, air-conditioned vehicle collects you at the cruise terminal for the scenic 90-minute drive into the Hakone volcanic zone. Your first stop is the Owakudani geothermal valley — steam billowing from black-egg vendors against a lunar landscape. A ropeway glide brings you above the caldera as Fuji emerges (cloud-willing) on the horizon. Board the vintage lake steamer across Ashi, disembarking at a traditional ryokan terrace for a kaiseki-inspired lunch with a mountain backdrop. The Hakone Open-Air Museum rounds out the afternoon with Picassos and Rodins set against cedar-clad hillsides.
Good to know
Mt. Fuji is clearest in autumn and winter — plan accordingly. Build in at least 8 hours for this excursion, with a firm return buffer for all-aboard. Ropeway can close in high winds; your guide will have contingency routes. Book as early as possible.
