Furnas is São Miguel's geological soul — a valley of steaming calderas, bubbling mud pots, and the legendary Terra Nostra Botanical Garden with its iron-rich thermal pool. A private guided half-day here is an immersion in earth-forces and 19th-century grandeur.
What to expect
Your driver-guide winds east through São Miguel's lush interior to Furnas, pausing at the lakeside calderas where locals cook traditional cozido stew underground in volcanic vents. At Terra Nostra Park, you wander 12 hectares of camellias, tree ferns, ginkgos, and cycads — one of Europe's most biodiverse botanical gardens — before soaking in the iconic 38 °C iron-mineral pool. Lunch at the park's restaurant, with that very caldeira-cooked cozido, is optional but extraordinary.
Good to know
Allow a full half-day (5–6 hrs return from port). Book Terra Nostra pool entry online in advance — capacity is managed. Bring a swimsuit and flip-flops; the pool will stain light-coloured swimwear a golden hue. The drive from port is approx. 45 minutes each way.
