Step inside the best-preserved 17th-century artillery fort in England — right at the port gates — where Queen Elizabeth I delivered her most famous speech as the Spanish Armada bore down on England in 1588.
What to expect
Enter through the magnificent Water Gate, designed to impress enemies arriving by river, and walk the ramparts for broad Thames Estuary views — the same panorama Elizabeth I surveyed. The powder magazines, guardrooms, and officers' quarters are beautifully preserved; the audio tour brings the 1588 speech and the Napoleonic-era garrison to vivid life. Occasional living-history events feature cannon firings and Tudor-costumed interpreters. The site is never crowded and rewards a genuinely peaceful 2-hour visit.
