Hike the rim of Sierra Negra, one of the world's most active volcanoes and home to the second-largest basaltic caldera on the planet at 10 km wide. The panorama of smoke-wisped lava fields dropping into a surreal volcanic floor is simply incomparable.
What to expect
A 4WD transfer from the port climbs into the lush Pampa zone before dropping you at the trailhead. The 16 km round-trip rim walk unfolds across hardened aa and pahoehoe lava fields, with sweeping views into the 100 m-deep caldera. On clear days you can see five of the archipelago's islands simultaneously. A side trail leads to Volcán Chico, where fumaroles still vent steam through vivid sulphur-stained vents — one of the most otherworldly scenes in the Galápagos.
