Pedal the legendary Schlögener Schlinge — the most dramatic oxbow bend on the entire Danube — along a dedicated riverside cycle path through forest, vineyard and cliff-face scenery that simply cannot be matched from the water.
What to expect
The route winds from Engelhartszell along the flat Danube Cycle Path (EuroVelo 6) to the iconic Schlögener Schlinge viewpoint, where the river performs a near-perfect 270-degree turn cradled by forested granite hills. Your expert local guide explains the geology, local legends, and Habsburg history at each vantage point. The ride back is equally scenic, with optional stops at riverside Heurigen (wine taverns) for local Grüner Veltliner. Total distance is a leisurely 20–25 km return.
Good to know
E-bikes are highly recommended for a relaxed pace. Book e-bikes in advance through local hire points; the Donau Touristik portal lists all certified operators along the route. Allow 4–5 hours return. Sturdy footwear and a light layer are advised.
