What to expect
A private vehicle takes you west from Kavala into the Nestos River canyon, where you walk a section of the riverside trail beneath towering cliffs, listening to nothing but birdsong and rushing water. Continue to Xanthi, where your guide leads you through the UNESCO-candidate old town — past rose-painted mansions, a vibrant covered bazaar, and coffee houses where locals have sat for generations. Lunch at a traditional taverna before a leisurely return to port.
Good to know
Xanthi is approx. 55 km west of Kavala (50 min drive); the Nestos Gorge trailhead is en route. This is a full excursion — plan on 6–7 hours. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Book in advance and confirm your all-aboard time explicitly with the operator. The trail section is flat and easy, suitable for most fitness levels.
