Step into the living culture of the Sami — Scandinavia's indigenous reindeer herders — at an authentic family-run camp outside Alta. Feed a reindeer herd, learn joik (sacred song), and feast inside a lavvu around an open fire.
What to expect
A private minibus collects guests from the port and transfers to a family-run reindeer camp on the tundra. The Sami host explains the seasonal migration of their herd in English and Sami, and guests are invited to hand-feed reindeer from traditional leather pouches. Inside the lavvu, a fire crackles as your host prepares bidos — the celebrated Sami reindeer stew — and shares the oral histories of their ancestors. Traditional Sami handicrafts (duodji) are explained and available to purchase directly from the artisan.
Good to know
Transfer from port included in most packages; confirm when booking. Dress in very warm layers — the lavvu is heated by fire but outdoor temperatures can reach -15°C. Three-hour duration fits comfortably within most Alta port calls. Advance booking essential.
