Discover Mavra Volia, Chios's hauntingly beautiful volcanic black-pebble beach near Emporios — one of the most visually dramatic coastlines in the Aegean, with crystalline turquoise water lapping obsidian shores.
What to expect
The beach's black and deep-red pebbles — forged by ancient volcanic eruptions — create a colour contrast with the Aegean that feels almost unreal, and the water is extraordinarily clear. Just above the beach sits the ancient Sanctuary of Aphrodite at Emporios, a 7th-century BC site where myth and geology collide. The nearby second cove, Mavra Volia II, is even more secluded and reached by a short cliff path. Your private guide frames the landscape with the island's mythological and geological story, making this far more than a swim stop. A chilled bottle of local wine or mastiha liqueur can be arranged for the beach.

Located ~42 km south of Chios Town — a private car is essential. Allow 2.5–3 hrs including travel. Water shoes recommended for the pebble entry. Go in the morning for calm, glassy water and soft light. Combine with the mastic village tour for a perfect full day.
